One Step Ahead

OSA Training:

Get Loud. Get Gone.

The Bad Guy wants quiet. He wants control.
You're not going to give him either.

RUNNING AWAY - IS A SELF DEFENCE SKILL

Let’s be crystal clear:
Running away is one of our best strategies. It's clever and it’s survival.

Running away works.

You might run away before a conflict ever turns physical.
You might run away during - in the middle of a struggle.

It doesn't matter when you do it.

In the words of Nike - Just Do It!

You might run right after you’ve hit him.

Or even before he's said a single word!

You don't have to win a race either.

It's not even completely about getting away.

When you run:

  • You become harder to hurt - because you're not there to be hurt!

  • You increase your visibility - movement catches the human eye rapidly

  • You break the rhythm of the attack - many attackers don’t chase once you run

  • You delay the attacker and that's something he really doesn't want because time is not on his side

Run towards:

  • Lights

  • People

  • Exits

  • Help

  • Buildings

If in doubt, remember:
Just run. Just Do It.

SHOUTING - IS A SUPERPOWER

Your voice is one of your most powerful self-defence assets there is.

In the more serious offences, the would-be attacker will often start by telling you to be quiet - that's how important it is to him as a tool.

That's your cue to shout, scream, command and be loud.

Be LOUD at the start, be LOUD during, just be frickin' LOUD! (Sorry for swearing).

Shouting does several things at once:

  • It draws attention - from people, passersby, even those around corners or in buildings up high or far away

  • It interrupts the Bad Guy’s control - and takes his power

  • It activates your own brain - helping snap you out of panic or freeze and you know then that you're going to stand up for yourself.

So scream and shout at the top of your lungs.

The attacker wants silence.
Silence gives him time.
Silence gives him the confidence that he's got you.
Silence gives him the illusion of control.

Your voice destroys all of that.

So use it.

Practice Plan

TODAY - Let's get tactical

  • You’ve trained your. brain. You've trained some of the techniques. Now let’s get a little bit tactical, shall we?

    Escape plans.

    Task 1: Shout

Most of us are not used to SHOUTING OUT LOUD! It feels wrong. We might be uncomfortable doing it. So now is the time to get this correct in our minds, to have a practice, to visualise in comfort.

  • You don’t need a partner.
    You don’t even need space.
    You just need your voice.

    • Alone? Shout into a pillow or put your hands over your mouth!

    • Housemates or family? Tell them first - then go for it. Maybe they'll join in!

    • Can’t shout 'cos your boss doesn't think it's good in the office? Have your boss replaced - or just visualise it. You choose.

"But what should I shout?" That's a question often asked.

It almost doesn't matter what you shout as long as you shout.

There is the old - "FIRE!! FIRE! FIRE!" Or "STOP! STOP! STOP!"
  • So now is the time to come up with your own favourites, or try these on repeat:

    • “LEAVE ME ALONE!”

    • “BACK OFF!”

    • “I DON’T KNOW YOU!”

    • “NO!”

    • “GO AWAY!”

Repeat each shout at least 3 times.

BUT IT ALMOST DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU SHOUT. The words are less important than the act itself.

    JUST SHOUT.

    Task 2: Practise Your Escape

    Grab pen and paper.

I want you to write at least 7 combinations of everything you've learned so far - the tactics and techniques.

These are your Self Defence Power Formulas - mental drills to build instinct.

Create combinations including The Fence, Movement, bypassing Freeze, Palm Heel Strikes, Shouting, Running away.

    Examples:

    • Start in The Fence → Shout → Strike → Run

    • Shout → Put Your Fence Up → Run

    • Freeze → Shout → Fence → Run → Strike

    • Fence → Strike x3 → Shout + Run

    • Shout → Move back 2 steps → Shout again

    • Fence → Strike → Move 2 steps right → Shout → Strike → Run + Shout

    • Fence → Step back → Strike → Shout → Run

Get creative. There are no specific right answers. Have a think.
    Get real.
    Make them YOURS.

This is how we build real-life response plans.

Today I just want you to make a note of these and understand them, have a think. Tomorrow I will ask you to go through and actually practice them.
  • REMEMBER:

    Get loud. Get gone.
    Stay powerful.
